History / Summary

The Tasmanian Volunteer Rifle Regiment was formed in 1878 with four companies in Hobart and two in Launceston. 1880 saw the reorganization of the Force into the Southern and Northern Divisions and titled the Tasmanian Local Force. The Rifle regiments at Hobart became known as the Tasmanian Rifle Regiment and those at Launceston were known as the Launceston Rifle Regiment. The lion passant collar badges appear to have been worn from about 1886.
