Original grave marker of 1058 Private (Pte) Alan James Kerr, A Company, 24 Battalion, of Camberwell, Vic. Prior to enlisting with the AIF, Pte Kerr attained the rank of lieutenant with the Senior Cadets, Citizens Military Forces. He enlisted on 19 January 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 10 May 1915. He was later commissioned to the rank of Lieutenant (Lt) and was killed in action on 27 July 1916 at Pozieres, France. Lt Kerr also had a brother who enlisted with the AIF; Captain Eric John Kerr, 11th Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps, of Camberwell, Vic, who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Ypres, Belgium.
