Description

15 carat gold watch fob commemorating Lieutenant Stanley Le Fevre from the First World War.
The fob is a Maltese cross with a central raised circle containing a soldier.
Reverse is engraved with the inscription, 'TO THE MEMORY OF THE LATE LIEUT S. LE FEVRE A.I.F. From PYENGANA Killed AUG 30TH 1918 His Duty Nobly Done'.
Stamped below this is, '[Unicorn] 15 W'.

History / Summary

Medallion presented by the people of Pyengana, Tasmania, to the family of Lieutenant Stanley Le Fevre, 39 Battalion AIF. Le Fevre was born at Pyengana in 1896, and was killed in action on 30 August 1918. Educated in Melbourne, he was employed there as a clerk by the Massey Harris agricultural machinery company before he enlisted in September 1915, claiming to be a 24 year old. He became number 781, Company Sergeant Major of C Company, 39 Battalion, and embarked in May 1916 aboard HMAT A11 'Ascanius'. Commissioned in France during 1916, Lieutenant Le Fevre was acting commander of A Company when the great Allied offensive commenced on 8 August 1918. He was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry in the advance on the towns of Suzanne and Maricourt, north of the Somme, on 10/11 August. The award was not recommended until 5 September, by which time he had been killed by shellfire near Cléry. Stan Le Fevre is buried at Hem Farm Military Cemetery, France.
