An aft view of the light cruiser HMAS Melbourne while on a steam trial from New York to Jamaica. In the foreground is the 6 inch gun; in the stern is the stern light and a flagpole for flying the flag while in port. With HMAS Sydney, the Melbourne carried out alternate patrols of the Caribbean (based in Jamaica) and the North Atlantic off Long Island (based at Halifax) between 1915 and 1916, as part of the North American and West Indies Squadron.
