Description
A muddy access road leading from the main runway of Gurney Airfield (out of picture), which was an operational air base jointly shared by 75 and 76 Squadrons RAAF during the decisive battle for Milne Bay. Set in a plantation, the fronded palm trees provided welcome shade and also camouflaged several wooden huts. Kittyhawk fighter aircraft were also hidden under the tree canopy to avoid detection by Japanese aircraft. Some Marston steel matting plates reinforce the unsealed road which is also buttressed by split timber.
