Description

Lathe turned brass trophy cup with stem and base, and ornate curved handles, mounted on a lathe turned laminated wood base. The cup is engraved on one side 'PRESENTED TO SGT. C.A. MARTIN ATHLETIC CHAMPION 459 sqdn R.A.A.F. 21.2.43.'. A brass plate attached to the front of the wooden base reads 'GAMBUT CUP 1943'.

History / Summary

This trophy was made from German shell cases and the wooden propellor boss from an Italian aircraft. It was awarded to 403224 Sergeant (later Flight Lieutenant) Claude Anthony Martin of 459 Squadron, RAAF, for an athletics competition held near the Gambut Airfields in Libya on 21 February 1943. Martin later served in 12 Squadron, RAAF. He enlisted in the RAAF in January 1941 and was discharged in November 1945.
