Description
Portrait of members of the 2nd Battalion at Mena Camp, Egypt. Identified is Major (Maj) Robert Scobie (5th from left) of Maitland, NSW, second in command of the 2nd Battalion. Maj Scobie enlisted on 27 August 1914 and embarked from Sydney, NSW, on 18 October 1914 aboard transport HMAT Suffolk (A23). He was wounded on 26 April 1915, but soon returned to his Battalion. He was promoted to Colonel and commanded the 2nd Battalion. He is mentioned in despatches three times for his coolness and resource in the face of violent counter attacks at Lone Pine where he was killed on 6 August 1915. Maj Scobie had ordered the retirement of several detached posts and was above the parapet off a sap throwing a bomb, when he fell back dead.
