Memorial card portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Sidney Ernest Peirce MC BSc, 4th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, British Expeditionary Force. Note the lyrics to Psalm 7 (2 Timothy 4:7-8) to the right of the portrait and the inscription underneath which reads, "our promoted student soldier". Lt Peirce completed his early education at East Maitland High School, NSW, and later attended Leeds University, England, on a travelling scholarship. He was a University Medallist in Chemistry and Mathemathics; a Baker, Deas Thompson and Caird Scholar; and a Slade and Norbert Quirk Prizeman. At the outbreak of War he enlisted in England in the Officers Training Corps and was commissioned on 12 November 1914. He crossed to France on 14 April 1915 and served continuously as Second Lieutenant in trenches near Ypres until he was wounded and later died in Etaples on 27 December 1915, aged 25 years.
