Portrait of Sergeant (Sgt) (Later Lieutenant) Vincent Charles Callen, 34th Battalion. The inscription reads, "sincerely yours, Vincent Callen". Sgt Callen, of Stockton, NSW, enlisted on 10 April 1916 and embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Horarata on 2 May 1916. He was awarded a Military Medal (MM) on 20 December 1917 for his service with the 3rd Division, 9th Infantry Brigade from 2 September 1917 to 25 February 1918. He was promoted to Lieutenant and was later killed in action in France on 20 August 1918, aged 29 years.
