Studio portrait of Antonio Sandorinaios, of Kaminia Pireus, Greece. Sandorinaios, a sponge diver before joining the Greek Army, was a forward observer in Korea and later a prisoner of war (POW) after his position was overrun by the Chinese and he was captured. He found his way to Camp 5, the Chinese POW camp on the Yalu River near the North Korean border with Manchuria, and was befriended by four Australian POWs, 2/400000 Corporal (Cpl) Donald Pattison Buck, 2/400030 Private (Pte) Robert (Bob) Parker, 3/400024 Pte Keith Roy (Mo) Gwyther and Pte T H J Hollis. "Tony the Greek", as he was affectionally known, formed a firm friendship with the four Australians. After release from the POW camp he returned to Greece, but had told the four he wanted to migrate to Australia. His former POW friends raised the money necessary and sponsored his migration to Australia. Initially he stayed on Keith Gwyther's dairy farm in Victoria but later moved to Shepparton. He worked very hard, repayed the debt, returned to Greece to "find a wife" and settled in Melbourne. He later died in a motor vehicle accident.
