Description
Studio portrait of 2401 Private (Pte) Harry Metcalfe, 5th Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion, of Collingwood, Vic (originally of Bolton, England). Pte Metcalfe enlisted on 14 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Osterley on 29 September 1915. He was killed in action on 18 June 1916 and is memorialised at Desplanque Farm Cemetery La Chappelle-de-Armentieres, France, as he has no known grave. His brother in law, 391 Pte Leslie Russell, 57th Battalion, was also killed in action on 27 February 1917 at Villers-Bretonneux, France. See also DA10384.
