Description

Studio portrait of two privates. Seated is 2401 Private (Pte) Harry Metcalfe, 5th Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion, of Collingwood, Vic; and 2396 Pte Samuel Connell Lecher, 5th Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion, of Collingwood, Vic (standing). Pte Metcalfe enlisted on 14 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Osterley on 29 September 1915. He was killed in action on 18 June 1916 and is memorialised at Desplanque Farm Cemetery La Chappelle-de-Armentieres, France, as he has no known grave. His brother in law, 391 Pte Leslie Russell, 57th Battalion, was also killed in action on 27 February 1917 at Villers-Bretonneux, France. Pte Lecher enlisted on 12 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Osterley on 29 September 1915. He returned to Australia on 6 June 1919.
