Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of two privates identified in the Darge Register as Kilfoy and Mayall. They are identified as probably 2641 Private (Pte) Herbert Gilfoy (Kilfoy), 6th Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion, of Yarram Yarram, Vic (originally of Lincolnshire, England), and 5553 Pte John Ernest Mayall, 11th Reinforcements, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, of Geelong, Vic. Pte Gilfoy enlisted on 2 August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915. He was transferred to the 58th Battalion on 23 February 1916 and on 21 July 1916 he was admitted to the 30th General Hospital in France suffering a gun shot wound to the head. He died on 26 July 1916. Pte Mayall enlisted on 9 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor on 11 October 1915. On 9 May 1916 he was transferred to the Divisional Ammunition Column and then on 11 August 1917 he transferred to the Australian Flying Corps. He returned to Australia on 3 July 1919.
