Description
A US PT Boat from the PT base on the southeastern shore of Milne Bay at Kona Kope approaches a makeshift buoy and an oil slick in north eastern Milne Bay which marks the last resting place of A16-245, a 6 Squadron RAAF Lockheed Hudson which was ditched by pilot 415152 Flt Lt Ray Kelly after poor weather delayed the aircraft long enough for it to run out of fuel 60 kilometres from base. After watching their plane sink after it floated for five minutes, and spending 15 minutes in the water, the crew of four were rescued by locals in lakatois (outrigger canoes) and eventually picked up by the PT Boat and taken to the Asheville class patrol gunboat, PG-22, USS Tulsa.
