Portrait of 262020 Flight Lieutenant John Joseph 'Jack' Pengilley, 5 Service Flying Training School (5SFTS) RAAF, standing beside a jeep at Point Cook. A veteran of the First World War, Pengilley had previously served in the Gallipoli campaign with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, later transferring to the Australian Flying Corps, with whom he flew operations over France and Belgium. In December 1940 Pengilley re-enlisted for service in the RAAF with the rank of Flying Officer, and served as a Flying Control Officer at various squadron stations in Australia until October 1945. He was discharged on 27 September 1945 with the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
