Looking west from rooftop of SAS compound sentry point, Bagram, Afghanistan
Landscape view across Afghanistan, showing wreckage and refuse from the Russian/Afghan war in the foreground, with local people fossicking through the rubbish. Peter Churcher recalled, "It's what you see when standing on the top of the Australian compound. I was sitting at the sentry point in which one of the SAS sit at night surveying the area seen in this painting. I painted this because it is so typical of the general feeling of the surrounds of Bagram, that is, piles of wrecked warcraft, rubbish and ruined Afghan dwellings with the ever present mountain range rising behind. Hercules flying in at the right. The people in the foreground are Afghan locals who are continuously seen around the area fossicking amongst the rubbish looking for things of use at home".
