Description

The work is the third of four drawings comprising the 'Poppy series'. The image is based on the tradition of honouring the dead by placing poppies against individual names on the roll. This simplified depiction the Australian War Memorial's Roll of Honour also acts as a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and enormous loss of life through war. More generally, this work reminds the viewer of the enduring impact of war on families. In particular, the artist is commemorating the death of her mother's brother in New Guinea during the Second World War.
