Description

Studio portrait of 3032 Private (Pte) George Eddy, 8th Battalion. A bread carter from Eaglehawk, Vic prior to enlistment , Pte Eddy had previously served as a Corporal with the Citizen Military Forces at Eaglehawk. He embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Osterley on 29 September 1915. Later transferring to the 57th Battalion, he was killed in action on 2 April 1917 in France, aged 21, and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Two cousins, 1024 Pte James Henry Eddy and 5741 Pte John Joseph Prior were also killed in action. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
