Unidentified soldiers and Egyptian civilians strolling in Esbekiah Street in a quarter of Cairo ...
Description
Unidentified soldiers and Egyptian civilians strolling in Esbekiah Street in a quarter of Cairo known as the Haret el Wasser, but referred to by the soldiers as 'The Wozzer'. Note the fire damage to the building. Not long before, aggrieved Australian and New Zealand soldiers had run amok, throwing bedding, mattresses and clothing from several brothels into the street and burning them. The British miltary police were summoned to an ugly scene, although most of those present were merely spectators; they averted serious trouble by withdrawing. Members of the 2nd Australian Division were involved in the 'Second Battle of the Wozzer' in August 1915.
