Collection related to the service of 704 Ernest Charles Barnes
Original graves of several artillerymen who were killed in action during the Third Battle of Ypres. Left to right, front row: the grave of 15261 Gunner Henry William Charles Pharoah of the 102nd Howitzer Battery, born in Hobart, Tas and killed in action on 17 August 1917; and that of 282 Gunner Guy Hooper of Adelaide, SA, from the same unit, who died on the same date. Back row: 46178 Private B Forshaw, 3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, who died on 20 August 1917; Lieutenant Cyril Clyde Franklyn of the 6th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, born in Northcote, Vic, who died on 22 August 1917; 479 Sergeant Edward Walpole Lewin of the same unit, born in Parramatta, NSW, who died on 22 August 1917; 2044 Corporal C F Sharpe of the same unit, who died on 22 August 1917. They are all buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Poperinghe, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
