Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 2130 Acting Corporal (A/Cpl) Edward Charles Torbitt. A clerk from Richmond Victoria prior to enlistment, A/Cpl Torbitt embarked along with his brother, 2131 Private (Pte) Francis Albert Torbitt (see DA13475) with the 3rd Reinforcements, 29th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Ballarat on 18 February 1916. Later wounded in the right thigh he was evacuated to England. Following his recovery he transferred to the Australian Army Pay Corps where he was appointed as Temporary 2nd Corporal. Later promoted to Extra Regimental Sergeant he returned to Australia on 15 June 1919. Pte Francis Torbitt was killed in action on 19 July 1916. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers’ notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
