Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of R5611 Private (Pte) Charles Alfred Campbell, holding a bugle. A plumber from Semaphore, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Campbell had previously embarked for overseas service with the service number 5611 and the rank of Driver with the 4th Reinforcements Divisional Train from Sydney on HMAT Argyllshire on 10 April 1915. Following his arrival in Egypt he became ill and returned to Australia. Following his recovery he re-embarked for overseas service with the 17th Reinforcements, 3rd Light Horse Brigade Train from Melbourne on HMAT Kabinga on 8 May 1916. Later serving in the Middle East, he developed neurasthenia and returned to Australia on 12 November 1917. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
