Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 10251 Sapper (Spr) William Fox, 10th Field Company Engineers and an unidentified soldier (positions unknown). A carpenter from Alphington, Victoria prior to enlistment, Spr Fox embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Runic on 20 June 1916. Later wounded in action, he was evacuated to hospital. Following his recovery he rejoined his unit but developed a dilated action of the heart and was evacuated to England. He returned to Australia on 12 December 1918 and was medically discharged. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930's, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
