Portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Allan Murray Jones, 46th Infantry (Australian Militia) climbing into the cockpit of a Bristol Biplane at the Central Flying School at Werribee, Victoria where he gained his Aviators' Certificate (No 1416) on 10 May 1915. He was a 21 year old pharmacist from Caulfield East, Victoria when he enlisted in the AIF on 6 January 1916 and embarked for overseas with No 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC) from Melbourne on 16 March 1916 aboard HMAT Orsova. He served in the Middle East and on the Western Front, was promoted to Major, was Mentioned in Despatches on three separate occasions, and was awarded a Military Cross (MC), a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and a bar to the DFC. Major Jones arrived back in Australian on 16 June 1919.
