Description

Dugouts near the Ypres Comines Canal bank, occupied by members of the 1st Australian Siege Battery during September and up to 6 October 1917. The guns, which were in position just forward of the dugouts, assisted in the barrages of the Third Battle of Ypres. During one enemy bombardment, a shell struck the corner of the dugout on the left, and burst harmlessly in the canal. Left to right: Gunner (Gnr) Dunbill; Bombardier A. Boughen (later Second Lieutenant); Gnr D. Cavanagh; Gnr English. This is an original Paget Plate negative. The same image is available in colour and is held at P03631.175.
