Bumi River
Description
The honour was awarded to the infantry units that participated in the advance to and fighting along the Bumi River. Following the successful landing at Scarlet Beach on 22 September 1943, the Australians quickly began moving south towards Finschhafen. Moving along the coast, they reached the Bumi River, near Kamloa, where they encountered prepared Japanese defences. Crossing the river further down stream, the Australians were able to outflank the Japanese and capture Snell’s Hill and Starvation Hill.
