Commando Road
Description
This honour was awarded for participation in the advance along Commando Road, in Bougainville’s Southern Sector. The main emphasis of the fighting on Bougainville was in its Southern Sector, where the Australians, leaving their base at Torokina, fought advanced towards the main Japanese base at Buin, in the south of the island. There were two axes of advance: the first was Buin Road, near the coast; the second, running parallel to the first, was Commando Road, situated further inland. The battle honour is unique to the 57th/60th Infantry Battalion.
