Egan's Ridge-Hongorai Ford
Description
This honour was awarded for participation in the offensive patrolling engagements leading to and the main assault across the Hongorai River, in Bougainville’s Southern Sector. Moving astride Buin Road, the Australians attacked on a two-battalion front: the 58th/59th Infantry Battalion crossed the Hongorai and cut the Aitara Track, while the 24th Battalion crossed the river at the Pororei Ford and occupied the high ground on Egan’s Ridge, heavily mined and booby trapped by the Japanese.
