This honour was awarded for participation in the offensive action against Axis forces along Ruweisat Ridge, between between Alamein and Kaponga (the defensive positions along the Alamein Line), Egypt. The attack was made by the New Zealand Division, supported by British tanks, and captured around 2,000 Italian prisoners. The action also relieved pressure at Tel el Eisa, where German troops had been attacking recently established Australian positions.
