Description
The German submarine U101 (foreground) at the dockyard in England. A class U99 patrol submarine, the U101 was commissioned on 15 May 1917. She had a complement of 39. Her displacement was 750 tons on the surface, and 952 when submerged; she carried two 3.4 inch guns and four 20 inch torpedo tubes. She sank 28 ships totalling 60,707 tons in a career covering eight patrols, and surrendered on 21 November 1918. The German submarines were divided among the Allied navies after the First World War for observation and testing; the Treaty of Versailles prohibited Germany from building more submarines or maintaining any in service.
