The coat of arms and motto, 'Fear God and Honour the King', on board HMAS Melbourne. The coat of arms or badge is derived from the Common Seal used by the Melbourne Town Council from 1843 until the formal grant of arms in 1940. The crest features (clockwise from top right) a whale, a sailing ship, a bull and a sheep, representing the chief exports of the city at that time. In addition there is a cross of St George with a crown at its centre, probably symbolising fidelity to Great Britain. Underneath is a scroll bearing the Latin motto 'Vires Acquirit eundo', a quotation from Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid that has been adopted by many organisations, including the city of Melbourne. Roughly translated, it means, 'it gains strength as it goes', or 'by going forward it acquires vigour'. The whole is surrounded by a wreath.
