Description

HMAS Parramatta towing the torpedoed Italian troopship Orione into the port of Castro. HMAS Yarra and two French destroyers are acting as escorts. The 400 troops and wounded aboard the Orione were picked up by the Australian destroyers HMAS Warrego, Huon and Parramatta; the Parramatta and Yarra assisted in towing the ship in to port. The Orione returned to port after a eventful few days that included rough weather, separation from the escorting destroyers and an encounter with a mine. The Australian officers and seamen involved in the rescue were warmly praised by the Italian Rear Admiral, Alfredo Acton. See EN0285, EN0300, EN0382.
