Description
A handwritten invitation from Engineer Lieutenant Commander Johns to Engineer Lieutenant Oscar Arthur Ireland of HMAS Huon to dinner at the Ferrovia (Railway) Hotel. The border of the invitation is decorated with sketches of a bottle, a champagne glass and beer mug; the badge of a lieutenant commander; a map showing Italy, the Iberian peninsula, France and part of Great Britain, with arrows from Italy to London; a tennis racquet and balls; a musical stave; a bed and a seated female figure, labelled 'Not included'; and a table covered with a tablecloth. The six ships of the Australian destroyer flotilla, including HMAS Huon, were on patrol duty in the Adriatic, with their base at Brindisi, Italy, between October 1917 and October 1918.
