Description

HMAS Melbourne standing by the destroyer that collided with HMS Furious, an aircraft carrier that was a pioneer of British naval aviation. On 2 August 1917 the first aircraft to land on a ship, a Sopwith Pup, landed on the ship's flying off deck. On 9 July 1918 HMS Furious mounted the first carrier based air strike, resulting in the destruction of two Zeppelins and their sheds.
