An informal photograph of the Australian Prime Minister the Right Honourable William Morris ...
An informal photograph of the Australian Prime Minister the Right Honourable William Morris (Billy) Hughes and Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood. Hughes arrived in England on an official visit on 7 March 1916 where he sought to meet all the men responsible for directing the war. In June, after incessant rounds of meeting and speeches, including two weeks confined to his sick bed, Hughes attended an allied conference in Paris to determine economic policies toward Germany as a member of the British delegation. While in France he visited Australian troops accompanied by Andrew Fisher, the High Commisioner in London, and is seen here at I Anzac Corps Headquarters with Lieutenant General Sir William Birdwood, who at this time commanded I Anzac Corps. Hughes visited Birdwood's Headquarters at a chateau in the Nieppe Forrest on 1 and 2nd June. This image is a frame enlargement from a 35mm motion picture film that has been cropped up along the bottom edge. This scene is included in AWM films F00047 and F00050. The original film for this scene was 'shot' by the British Official Cinematographer Bede Tongs. One of a series of 62 photographs acquired by C.E.W. Bean from a number of sources in the 1920s. None were taken by Bean, but acquired to augment his own photographs. All were registered in his personal (C.B.) series and carry a C.B. number. All were subsequently registered in the AWM G Series under one accession number, G01534, and use a series of alphabetic extensions, commencing with G01534A, to accommodate the 62 items.
