Studio portrait of 2715 Private (Pte) Thomas John Marsh, 51st Battalion from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. A 35 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 18 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements of the 28th Battalion from Fremantle, Western Australia on 2 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ulysses. Shortly after arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 51st Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. He was captured at Mouquet Farm, France, on 15 August 1916 and held as a prisoner of war (POW) in Germany. Pte Marsh was repatriated to England on 7 December 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 21 April 1919. On 26 May 1919 he committed suicide. This image was taken of him whilst a POW in Germany.
