Description

Portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Horace Hubert Sibbison, 21st Battalion from Daylesford, Victoria. A 26 year old strike, journalist and lyricist prior to enlisting on 9 March 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private with B Company from Melbourne on 10 May 1915 aboard HMAT Ulysses. He joined the battalion in France in March 1916 and was wounded in action. On his recovery, he returned to France where he saw further action and received several promotions, reaching the rank of Sergeant. After being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in August 1917, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 2 January 1918. Lt Sibbison was killed in action near Albert, France on 14 April 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
