Description

Studio portrait of 691 Private (Pte) Richard Henry Chase, 16th Battalion from Perth, Western Australia. Prior to enlisting on 14 October 1914, he had previous service with the Natal Mounted Police and the Bechuanaland Field Force in South Africa and had served with the 2nd Scottish Force and the 2nd Western Australian Contingent in the Boer War. While he claimed to be 47 years old, he was a 54 year old orchardist and civil servant prior to enlisting. He embarked for overseas service with D Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 22 December 1914 and after disembarking in Egypt, underwent further training. Two days after landing at Gallipoli, he was killed in action at Pope’s Ridge on 27 April 1915 and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave. He was brother to Colonel William St Lucian Chase, VC CB of the British Indian Army.
