Studio portrait of 2411 Private (Pte) Leslie John Sellwood, 22nd Battalion from Prahran, Victoria. A 21 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 10 July 1915, he had previously served with the 49th Infantry Militia. He embarked for overseas service with the 5th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France in March 1916 and was killed in action at Pozieres on 5 August 1916. Pte Sellwood is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
