Studio portrait of 3 Sergeant (Sgt) Mathew David Black, 11th Battalion, of Molesworth, Vic. A professional soldier, Sgt Black embarked from Fremantle on HMAT Ascanius on 2nd November 1914. Later promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt), he was killed in action in France on 10th August 1918 and was buried in Heath Cemetery, Harbonniers.
