Informal portrait of 1748 Sergeant (later Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt)) Andrew Robert Dunkley, carrying a rifle with a bayonet attached, over his shoulder. Dunkley a 28 year old miner of Hobart Tas, enlisted in Fitzroy, Vic on 3 October 1914 and embarked from Fremantle, WA on the HMAT Argyllshire on 19 April 1915, with the 4th Reinforcements, 11th Infantry Battalion. 2nd Lt Dunkley was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres Area, France, on 3 September 1916, as a member of the 51st Battalion. Prior to his enlistment, 2nd Lt Dunkley was an ardent Secretary for the mining members of the Australian Workers Association.
