Studio portrait of 5117 Corporal William John Alfred Layburn, 22nd Battalion, of Dunedin, New Zealand. Working in Victoria as a wool buyer when war was declared, William Layburn enlisted with the AIF on 1 December 1915 and as a member of the 13th Reinforcements he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ayrshire (A33) on 3 July 1916. He served on the Western front in France and Belgium and was awarded the Military Medal in 1918. He was killed in action on 28 August 1918, aged 30 years.
