Description
Paris, France. 1918. United States Army General J.J. Pershing salutes at the grave of Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette was well known to the Americans as he had assisted them in the war against the British in 1777/78 and later in 1824/25 he toured the United States extensively meeting seven Presidents during the tour. He died on 20 May 1834 at the age of 78 and was buried next to his wife in the Picpus Cemetery. The United States flag has flown over Lafayette's grave for a great many years and when the German Army captured Paris during WWII the flag was not disturbed. (Donor French Official Photograph)
