Abstract

Colonel Charles Herbert Davis followed his father in a life of public service in the city of Bendigo and his sudden death in 1923 was recorded by the press as the passing of a distinguished Bendigonian.
His military career was highlighted by his role of commander of the Guard of Honour at the opening of the first Federal Parliament in Melbourne in 1901. Command of the 38th Battalion on its formation in 1916 which continued until 1918 with appointment as Commandant of the Australian Base Depots in France through which almost 100,000 Australians Troops were prepared for transport to England and then to Australia.
