Abstract
The 2/1st Field Regiment had served in Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Greece and Ceylon before returning to Australia in August 1942. The next month, the regiment was sent to New Guinea, but because of the mountainous country, field artillery could not be transported into the interior. The regiment responded by suggesting that they strip down their 25-pounder guns so the guns could be transported by aircraft.
