Abstract
In December 1992, the Australian Government announced it would contribute a force to the US-led UN-sanctioned peacemaking operation in Somalia. This Operation was known as Restore Hope and the Australian participation was to be known as Operation Solace.
This was to be Australia's largest commitment of soldiers since the Vietnam war.
