Note Air navigation orientation map of the area around Balikpapan Harbour in Dutch Borneo (now the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Timur). Scale ca. 1:130,000. Shows the Makassar Strait, small islands and capes, oil and paraffin refineries, cracking plant, oil pipelines, new barracks at Penadjam, water pumping station and pipeline at Wain, main road and rivers. Includes navigational distance circles and compass readings indicating "magnetic bearings toward the target". "4 Oct. 1944". Includes, on verso, 4 aerial photographs: Balikpapan (showing locations of Japanese barracks), Luboil & paraffin refinery, Pandansari refinery, and Edeleanu plants. AWM's copy includes, as a loose-leaf attachment, a top secret telegram describing Allied mines in the deep water channels approaching Balikpapan and Adang Bay.
