Note | "This record was compiled by members of the Esk RSL Sub Branch Inc for the Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC 25th April 2015" --Title page. "The centenary of ANZAC Day"--Title from DVD. The book was prepared to honour those from the Esk district in the Brisbane Valley who gave their lives in the defence of freedom in World War I. Generally the war did not come to Australia but was close, one of the first actions of the war was the capture of the German radio stations in New Guinea and other south sea islands. This was in the later half of 1914. There are eighty-three names on the Esk Cenotaph of those who lost their life in Europe and the Middle East. During the research there were some soldiers whose records could not be found with any certainty. The Esk Patriotic Committee on behalf of the Shire of Esk commissioned the memorial.Subscriptions commenced in 1916, and prominent Ipswich architect George Brockwell Gill called tenders inApril 1919. The foundation stone was laid on 30 November 1920, and the memorial was unveiled in 1921, probably in September. It cost £885. The Esk Memorial Park was proclaimed a reserve for memorial purposes in 1979, but the Esk Cenotaph has stood on the site, at the intersection of Highland and Ipswich Streets, since 1921. The Cenotaph consists of a sandstone plinth with four ionic comer pilasters and an entablature sheeted in bronze. Recessed into each of the four faces is a marble tiled panel with a bronze honour roll of 462 shire residents who enlisted together with the letters AIF and its emblem. The memorial sits on a stepped base of concrete aggregate. Three bronze honour rolls bearing the names of 83 local men who fell during the First World War are fi xed to the side and rear of the plinth. Four commemorative plaques bearing inscriptions 1939 - World War II 1945, 1914 - The Great War - In Honour Of Our Boys - 1919, Korea - Malaya, and Borneo - Vietnam are fixed to the front of the plinth. --Preface. |
