Abstract

In this article the author briefly describes the two referendums held in Australia during 1916 and 1917 to bring in conscription.  He points out that Billy Hughes; the Australian Prime Minister had reached the conclusion that conscription in Australia was essential.  The author does not go in the case for or against conscription but delves on the influence of Billy Hughes to it.  The author concludes that there were long term consequences for Australia following the two failed referendums.
