Note | Includes bibliographical references (pages 194-200) Central to this story is a family's inter-generational service to humankind through church and military. There are wonderful links. Firstly, there is The Very Reverend James Edward Jackson in Britain and Ireland and his alleged spying for Britain in Napoleon's France in 1802. Secondly, his grandson Gerald Bayley Carter who served in India during the British Raj as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He continued to serve after joining the Australian Imperial Force for World War 1 and spent seven mont hs on Gallipoli as a Regimental Medical Officer. The narrative elaborates upon an event and the treatment of Major GB Carter during WW1 in Cairo that was shameful, and bereft of common sense. Carter provided medical services to civilian communities in New Zealand and Australia before, during and after WW1. Thirdly, his son Gerald Chester Carter was a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Australian Navy during World War 2. It tells of GC Carter's Navy life across thirty-six years where he served on more than forty different ships. It tells how his feisty fiancée braved the enemy in 1939 when she left London via Canada to arrive in Sydney in 1941 to marry 'her boy'. This component of the narrative is endearing and truly a love story. There is a continuing stor y of service, dedication and love under difficult circumstances in each of the lives and the families of these people. Their relations can be very proud of them. The title is a statement that was made by a character in this book but it implies there are q uestions such as 'who', 'why', 'where' and 'when' it was made. |
